EX-PAT LIFE ON THE COSTA DE LA LUZ/ALGARVE

Useful tips and local information – Algarve Motorway Tolls

Here is an attempt to explain to temporary visitors/residents, on either side of the border, the new A22 Monte Gordo-Lagos ("Via do Infante" autoroute tolls total +/-€12 including IVA tax or 7.3cents/km excluding tax) and to make the system understandable to those driving non-Portuguese-registered (or locally-hired) vehicles. NOT an easy task - even the officials don´t understand it all, despite having been introduced 8 December 2011! If this is all just too daunting, the alternative of using the now over-crowded and already ill-maintained EN125 route is even more so.

The first point to try to remember at the end of all this is that retrospective payment, as applicable to nationals or foreign, permanent, residents (which requires a further, separate explanation), is not available to visiting foreign-plated cars, nor to those who cannot pay by debit or credit card, although it has been mentioned that there may be `a few´ manned "Peage" booths. Yet another aspect is the confusion which reigns with regard to rented vehicles, referred to below at the end.

The second point is that not all post offices, IKEA in Matosinhos, designated highway service areas (currently: A22 Olhão, A23 Abrantes, A25 Celorico da Beira, A28 Vila do Conde, A28 Viana do Castelo), MSCar (Car Sales) http://www.mscar.pt/eng/onde_estamos.asp - Faro: E.N. 125-km. 98,6 Sítio do ArneiroTel: 707 289 707 (from within Portugal) GPS: N 37.06245, W 7.968956. Portimão: Pedra Mourinha, Lote 13 8501-910 Tel: 707 282 700 (from within Portugal) GPS: N 37.143043, W 8.549423 and ACP (the Automobile Club of Portugal - one may have to belong to this) or "Via Verde" offices/stores based in eastern Tavira (temporary), central Faro and western Portimão (temporary), are yet fully-stocked with "Temporary Devices". Should you be in luck, having found a post office etc, the process is rather time-consuming and may even require possession of a Portuguese "Multibanco" system debit/credit card. (The nomination of MSCar, some service areas and IKEA as vendors is clearly discrimination.)

Further pre-payment points are to be made available at Faro Airport (possibly), Porto (Sá Carneiro) Airport, and on-line (only Portuguese at the moment) where you may obtain a pre-paid 3-day temporary device for €20 for unlimited use on specific motorways: from Spain to Porto Airport via the A28 or A41, Spain to Faro Airport via the A22 and (again, possibly) at the border crossings at Vila Nova de Cerveira, Vilar Formoso and Vila Real de Santo António.

Not in vain is it called the Coast of Light, for it is sunlight that bathes its lush and unspoilt coastline, even in wintertime.

Spain - the success story continues

According to a report issued last September by Germany's Deutsche Bank,
Spain’s economic success over recent years has been most impressive – and more importantly – likely to continue. Analysis of the roots of this success is a pre-requisite for assessing the likelihood of a correction, which may affect the medium-term property market outlook.

ISLA CANELA - A beach paradise
Isla Canela is a natural, sandy, island separated from the mainland by a network of canals and the River Guadiana, and is located in the municipality of Ayamonte, province of Huelva, just a 5 minute drive from the centre of this riverside port town. It is situated on the Spanish Costa de la Luz, adjacent to the border with the Portuguese Algarve. It is well connected by motorways and bus services to the airports of Faro on the Algarve and, slightly more distant, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera, and also with the capital of Huelva city, while the island itself is situated away from the major through roads of the area, which are nonetheless only a few minutes away for access.  The surrounding commercial and residential areas are non-industrial and the environs consist of agriculture, natural wildlife preserves, golfing, sailing and holiday complexes.

Ayamonte, set on a hill gazing at the River Guadiana, is the most western point on the Costa de la Luz in the South of Spain. Ayamonte is often referred to as “The Door to Spain” due to its proximity with the neighbouring country of Portugal, to which it is linked by the modern International Bridge. It is a delightful and picturesque riverside port town, full of life, traditions and centuries of history, which are reflected on each corner of its narrow cobbled streets.
